Five questions with Kai Young

The freshman middle blocker discusses her first season, the offseason and more

Editor’s note: Every Wednesday throughout the offseason, we’ll catch up with volleyball student-athletes for five questions.

Q: How would you assess your freshman season?

YOUNG: “I definitely think it was a lot of learning for me and a lot of growing. I had the chance to be under Cara [Cunningham] and Stacey [Christy], which was awesome for me because they’re great at teaching and have a lot of experience. I think that was great coming in and having that leadership at my position. It was also really cool because I think a lot of the girls were ready for a change, so it was nice to come in with that mindset. I think it was a great freshman season.”

Q: Is there a favorite moment, on or off the court, that sticks out to you from this fall?

YOUNG: “I think maybe just a lot of the team bonding stuff we did, our team is really close. We definitely hang out, we have our own friend groups, but our team is great at coming together. We just have a ton of fun with each other.”

Q: How are classes going so far and do you have a favorite class?

YOUNG: “Classes are going good so far, I’m actually pretty excited about them. I think my favorite one so far would be my Intro to World Literature class, the teacher is really awesome. This is probably her last semester teaching, too. I’m excited to have her class because I’ve heard so many good things about it.”

Q: What part of your game are you trying to improve the most this offseason?

YOUNG: “I definitely think just my volleyball IQ with being able to assess the game, my opponent better and study up more. Also, to work on my speed as well.”

Q: With being the oldest in your family, a big sports family, what was that like growing up?

YOUNG: “It’s highly competitive in my house (laughing), everything is a competition, even with family game nights when everyone is competing against each other, including the little ones – they hate losing. So, I just think it has always been for us a great environment to grow up in, because everything was a competition and that has translated to volleyball for me. That drive for me has come from my family I think.”
