STANFORD, Calif. - Hanna Green broke the school record in the 800 again and several other Hokies ascended in the national rankings after impressive finishes at the Payton Jordan Invitational hosted by Stanford University on Saturday evening.
In a race where seven of the nation’s top-10 times were ran, Green crushed her own school record in the 800, posting an impressive time of 2:02.62 to take fifth place. Green’s time is currently ranked seventh in the nation and second in the ACC.
Amanda Smith climbed to 14th in the nation, setting a personal best in the women’s 1500 after finishing in fourth place in her heat. Smith’s time of 4:15.33 also ranks fifth in the ACC and second in the Virginia Tech record books behind teammate Shannon Morton. Katarina Smiljanec finished in second in her heat of the women’s 1500 with a time of 4:21.60.
Sarah Rapp and Paige Kvartunas took the sixth and eighth spots, respectively, in the women’s 5000-meter race. Rapp crossed the finish line at 16:19.92 while Kvartunas checked in at 16:24.09. Kvartunas set a personal best and climbed to eighth in the Virginia Tech record books.
In their section of the men’s 800-meter race, Kevin DeWillie and Martin Dally finished in fifth and sixth places, respectively. DeWillie posted a time of 1:51.43 while Dally clocked in at 1:55.15.
Neil Gourley posted the best time out of the men’s 1500-meter race. Gourley finished in seventh in his heat with a time of 3:44.27. He moves into the eighth spot overall in the Virginia Tech record books.
Thomas Curtin posted a time of 13:44.03, a personal best, to take first place in his section of the men’s 5000. Curtin climbed to 15th in the nation and third in the ACC in the event. He moves to the second spot overall in the Virginia Tech record books.
The Hokies will be competing next on Thursday at the Virginia Tech-Roanoke College Distance Classic.
