STANFORD, Calif. – Senior All-Americans Michael Hammond (1500 meters) and Will Mulherin (5000 meters) each set school records as the Virginia Tech distance crew competed against some of the nation’s top collegiate and professional distance runners at Stanford’s Payton Jordan Invitational at Cobb Track Sunday night.
Hammond finished second in section two of the men’s 1500 meters in a school record 3:39.22, bettering the record held for 25 years by Gary Cobb of 3:39.35. Hammond’s time currently ranks among the top five in Division I in the event and just missed the U.S. Olympic Trials “A” or automatic standard of 3:39.00.
Mulherin finished fourth in section two of the men’s 5000 meters as he reset his own Tech record for the second time this season, this time by over eight seconds in 13:41.06, which again put him under the Olympic Trials “B” standard of 13:50.00.
Also in the men’s 1500 meters, senior Chris Walizer clocked a personal best of 3:42.61 in section three, good for fourth all-time at Tech. That mark also gives Walizer the Olympic Trials “B” standard. Redshirt freshman Grant Pollock finished fifth in section four (3:45.88) and classmate Kevin Dowd led the Hokies in section five with a PR of 3:47.46, good for seventh place in that section.
In the women’s 1500 meters, junior Sammy Dow clocked a personal best and the fifth fastest time in Tech history of 4:24.50 to place fifth in section five. Sophomore Paige Kvartunas finished fourth in section six in 4:33.80.
Freshman Amanda Smith clocked an outdoor personal best 2:09.85 in the women’s 800 meters, good for eighth on Tech’s all-time performance list. Redshirt freshman Martin Dally led the Hokies in the men’s 800 meters, as he was second in section four in 1:51.84.
