Hokies open NCAA Diving Zones
Tech divers set for regional event
March 5, 2018
BLACKSBURG – Nine Virginia Tech divers are heading to the 2018 NCAA Zone A Diving Championships hosted by Rutgers University.
The Hokies will be represented by Ashley Buchter, Miranda Eberle, Ashlynn Peters and Regan Westwood on the women’s side. For the men’s team Eduardo Castro-Silva, Mauro Castro-Silva, Jack Gigliotti, Ben Schiesl and Thomas Shinholser are set to represent Tech.
All dives (prelims & finals) will count toward a final score with the A zone sending at least six women in both the 1-meter and 3-meter and five women in the platform. On the men’s side at least six men will be sent to NCAAs from the 1-meter and a minimum of five men in the 3-meter and platform.
During the season, divers must score a certain mark to be invited to NCAA Zone Championship. At each zone, divers must qualify for their invitation to the national championships. Each of the NCAA's five zones earn a different amount of invite slots, based on how that zone's divers preformed at last year's NCAAs.
The invites are determined by:
- Each zone is guaranteed a number of women's and men's spots per event. ('A' cut)
- Zones earn bonus spots on top of those five/four based on last year's results. ('A' cut)
- Any eligible diver can compete in any of the three diving events at NCAAs, provided he/she earns one of the invitation spots and places top-12 in the other two events at that Zone. ('B' cut)
