Eight H2Okies named to All-ACC Academic Team

Fiala earns All-Academic honors for the fourth time in his career

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Virginia Tech swimming and diving program has eight representatives on this year’s swimming and diving All-ACC Academic team, the conference announced Wednesday.

Seniors Caroline Buscaglia, Maggie Gruber, Jessica Hespeler and sophomore Ashlynn Peters represent the H₂Okies on the women’s squad while senior Brandon Fiala, junior Mauro Castro Silva and sophomore Ben Schiesl and Ian Ho represent on the men’s side.

The women H₂Okies tied with Duke, Florida State and Miami for the second-most honorees with four apiece. Buscaglia, a political science major, adds the All-Academic Team selection to a senior campaign which also saw her receive the prestigious ACC Postgraduate Scholarship. Gruber was named to the All-Academic Team for a third time.

This season, Fiala is the only male swimming and diving student-athlete to be named to the All-Academic team for the fourth time.

Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one’s academic career for undergraduate students. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.
