Fiala earns Honorable Mention All-American honors on first day of NCAAs

The senior places in the top 16 of the 200 IM for the second time

INDIANAPOLIS - Senior Brandon Fiala continues to leave his mark in the program record book as he earned Honorable Mention All-American honors in the 200 IM on Thursday for the Virginia Tech men’s swimmers on the first day of NCAA Championships.

“We appreciate Brandon's IM work over the years,” head coach Ned Skinner said. “He has meant so much to our team and this training group. We are happy to be on the scoreboard and tomorrow is a big day for us with many excellent opportunities.”

Fiala clinched a spot in the top 16 after swimming a 1:42.38 in the prelims. He finished 13th overall, the fifth-fastest time in the B final, with a time of 1:42.80. FIala claimed the silver medal in the 200 IM at the ACC Championships last month in Atlanta.

Senior Robert Owen will hit the pool in the first event of the day tomorrow with the prelims of the 400 IM where he’s seeded fourth. Friday will also see Fiala swim the 100 breast, sophomore Norbert Szabo swim the 200 free and sophomore Sean Workman swim the 100 back.
