H20kies conclude competition at U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials
Successful weeks from Owen and Fiala lead Tech in Omaha

OMAHA, Neb. -- Senior Maggie Gruber took first in her heat and finished 31st overall with a 25.83 in the women’s 50 meter freestyle to wrap up the Virginia Tech swimming and diving team’s competition at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials in Omaha.

Junior Adriana Grabski registered a time of 26.53 in the same event. In total, the H20kies saw five different swimmers post top 30 times in their respective events, two semifinalists and one finalist in senior Robert Owen. Owen finished sixth overall in the 200 backstroke and was also listed as an alternate in the finals of the 400 meter individual medley.

“It has been an outstanding week here in Omaha and we are proud of our team and their performances,” said head coach Ned Skinner. “We had many best times and we are excited to come home and build on this momentum. The ACC was strong here across the board and we are thankful to be a part of it. “

The H20kies will back for the regular season starting in mid-October. Skinner will be entering his 19th season at the helm of the Tech swimming and diving program, which is coming off a 2015-16 campaign where both the men’s and women’s squads earned spots in the top 25 in the CSCAA poll.
