Tech divers to compete at NCAA Zone A Championship
The Hokies sent seven divers to the event

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech men’s and women’s diving teams will compete in the 2016 NCAA Zone A Diving Championships at the Naval Academy’s Lejeune Hall March 7-9 to determine the entries to the 2016 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships.

Tech will have five men’s divers in Mauro Castro-Silva, Eduardo Castro-Silva, Jack Gigliotti, Ben Schiesl and Logan Stevens. Ashlynn Peters and Leah Piemonte will represent the women’s team at the Zone A Championships. The divers will compete in the 1-meter, 3-meter and platform events to try and qualify for the NCAA Championships.

The men are coming off a performance where they put up 247 team points at the 2016 ACC Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships. The total was 98 points higher than the next team, Georgia Tech.

In men’s diving portion, the Hokies had three divers make it to the platform finals. Mauro, who finished with his third finals appearance of the ACC Championships, led Tech with a bronze medal in the men’s platform to cap off a week where he finished in the top six in all three diving events. Eduardo also made his second finals appearance in his first ACC Championships and finished sixth in the platform finals. Stevens took home fifth place in the platform with a score of 362.05.

Mauro came in sixth place in the men’s 1-meter finals with a score of 319.65. Schiesl finished eighth in the finals with as core of 277.00. Four Tech divers in total earned 75 points as Stevens and Eduardo also contributed.

In the 3-meter event, Mauro finished fourth for the Hokies with a finals score of 364.70. Eduardo finished in seventh place with a finals score of 317.50. Schiesl came in ninth while Stevens came in 13th after the preliminaries. Gigliotti also scored in the event.

On the women’s side, Ashlynn Peters made the finals of the women’s platform and finished seventh with a score of 244.15 and her scored earned the team 23 points. Piemonte also scored points in the platform event. Peters also scored in the 1-meter and 3-meter events.

112 divers have qualified for the Zone A Championship on at least one board. Women had to post scores of at least 265 points to qualify for the zone meet on the one-meter board, 280 points for the three-meter event and 225 points to compete in the platform diving event. Men had to obtain scores of at least 300 points on the one meter, 320 points on the three meter and 300 points in platform to qualify for the zone meet.
