GREENSBORO, N.C. - The No. 24 Virginia Tech men’s swimming team finished day two of the 2016 ACC Championships with a gold medal performance from Brandon Fiala.

The Hokies currently sit in second place behind No. 7 NC State after two days of competition.

“I’m very proud of the men today. Every guy tonight improved either his time or his place. Brandon Fiala, who won gold tonight, is such an impressive young man, it’s very inspiring. Today put us in a position where we have a chance tomorrow to go out and do great things and we are excited about our opportunities.,” head coach Ned Skinner said.

Fiala, who won the 200 IM at the 2015 ACC Championships, defended his title after he posted the fastest time in the preliminaries at 1:42.77. He followed it up by swimming a 1:42.26 in the A final to win back-to-back gold medals. His time in the finals is also broke his own school record

Robert Owen also made the A final in the 200 IM and finished seventh with a time of 1:44.95. Lucas Bureau and Sean Workman also scored points as the team combined for a total of 73 points in the event.

Michal Szuba finished fifth in the A final of the 500 free with a time of 4:20.11 and earned 25 team points. Ian Ho competed in the 50 free and swam a 20.25 to earn two team points. The 200 free relay swam a 1:18.96 to finish seventh and earn 46 team points.

The Hokies will be back in the pool for preliminaries at 10 a.m. tomorrow for the 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back and the 400 medley relay. The finals of those events will begin at 6 p.m. and ESPN3 will have live coverage.
