BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech men’s swimming and diving team knocked off No. 21 Virginia and Towson on Senior Day at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center.
The Hokies beat the No. 21 Cavaliers 212.5-104.5, making it the third straight year the men have beaten Virginia in a dual meet. Tech also knocked off Towson 282-69. Tech improves to 11-0 in dual meets this season.
Lucas Bureau helped lead the Hokies as he won the 200 free with a time of 1:39.39. Brandon Fiala took first in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:01.72. The Hokies also took three of the top four spots in the 50 free as Ian Ho and Lucas Bureau finished first and second.
Robert Owen won the 400 IM with a time of 3:58.61 and Norbert Szabo won the 100 fly swimming a time of 49.31 as Tech took three of the top four spots in the event. The A relay in the 200 medley edged the Cavaliers for first place with a time of 1:30.00.
“I feel really good about our men. The young guys they’re learning, not just in a dual meet against Virginia but they’re learning what it takes to excel at an elite Division I level. The leadership that’s been exerted by our four seniors lays the groundwork for our future,” head coach Ned Skinner said.
In diving, Logan Stevens, Ben Schiesl and Mauro Castro-Silva took the top three spots in the 1-meter. Stevens won with a score of 326.40. Stevens finished second last night in the 3-meter event as Castro-Silva won with a score of 363.15.
On Friday night, Virginia Tech’s A relay in the men’s 200 free took first place with a time of 1:21.53. Brandon Fiala won the 200 IM with a time of 1:49.94 while Norbert Szabo finished third in the event. Fiala also won the 100 breaststroke in a time of 55.50.
Michal Szuba finished second in the 500 free with a time of 4:29.81.Robert Owen and Sean Workman finished first and second in the 200 back. Owen won with a time of 1:47.29 while Workman swam a 1:48.06. Lucas Bureau won the 100 free in 45.21.
The Hokies will be back in action at Cincinnati with Wright State next Saturday.
