GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Virginia Tech women’s swimming & diving team finished the second day of competition at the NCAA Championships Friday at the Greensboro Aquatic Center. Senior Kaylea Arnett earned All-America honors with a sixth-place finish in the 3-meter diving event to highlight the day for the H2Okies.
“We are very proud of Kaylea, and she is such a strong competitor especially after overcoming yesterday’s event,” head coach Ned Skinner said. “We are on the scoreboard now and we hope to finish tomorrow the right way.”
Arnett finished second in the morning prelims with a score of 370.5 before finishing sixth in the evening finals with a score of 360.60. The top-eight finish earned Arnett her third All-America honor. She also has five honorable-mention All-America finishes.
Kelli Stockton competed in the morning 3-meter diving prelims, finishing 30th with a score of 301.50, and Ashley Buchter finished 41st with a score of 274.45.
In the morning swimming session, Tech earned two top-30 finishes in the same race when Weronika Paluszek finished 27th in the 100 breast after touching the wall in 1:00.52 and Mackenzie Stewart earned 30th with a time of 1:00.63.
Fiona Donnelly also earned another top-30 finish when she scored 25th in the 400 IM with a time of 4:10.90. Klaudia Nazieblo finished in 26th in the 100 back with a time of 52.94, just .41 seconds off her own school record.
Maggie Gruber raced in two events in the session, taking 44th in the 100 fly (53.35) and 47th in the 100 back (55.43). In the 200 free, Jessica Hespeler finished 46th with a time of 1:47.53.
The final day of the championships begins at 11 a.m. on Saturday. The following Tech swimmers will compete in their respective competitions in the morning prelims: Nazieblo and Donnelly in the 200 back, Paluszek and Stewart in the 200 breast, Nazieblo and Gruber in the 200 fly, and Jessica Hespeler in the 1650 free.
Platform diving prelims will begin at 1:45, featuring four Tech divers, Arnett, Stockton, Buchter and Emma Villarreal.
ESPN3 will carry the Saturday finals, with Sam Gore on play-by-play and Rowdy Gaines and Cynthia Potter providing commentary. GoPack.com will stream the morning session here.
