BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech swimming & diving teams travel to North Carolina for a pair of dual meets at North Carolina at 5 p.m. on Saturday and at Duke at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
The Hokies are coming off of strong performances at the Virginia Tech Swimming & Diving Challenge where the men earned victories over Penn State and Old Dominion and the women earned victories over Old Dominion, Liberty and James Madison.
Owen Burns was impressive in the pool for the men, winning the 100 yard freestyle, the 200 yard freestyle and the 100 yard individual medley. Jake Ores, C.J. Fiala, Brandon Fiala and Morgan Latimer also won events at the meet.
For the women, Klaudia Nazieblo led the team, earning victories in the 200 yard butterfly, the 200 yard backstroke and the 100 yard individual medley. She wasn’t the only one earning victories, as Holly Harper, Alyssa Bodin and Weronika Paluscek each finished first in a few of their events.
In the diving events, Thomas Shinholser had two first-place finishes in both the 1-meter and the 3-meter and Ashley Buchter won the 3-meter and Kaylea Arnett won the 1-meter for the women.
North Carolina comes into the meet with impressive performances against Tennessee and Georgia already this year, earning their women a No. 5 ranking in the CSCAA poll. On the men’s side, the Tar Heels lost 155-145 to Georgia but beat Tennessee, 170-130. The women also lost to Georgia, 164-136, but earned a victory over Tennessee, 204-96.
Duke will host UNC Wilmington on Saturday before squaring off against the H2Okies on Sunday. The Blue Devils have already competed in one event against Pittsburgh, where their women defeated Pitt 162-138 and their men won 170-128.
