BLACKSBURG, Va. – Ryan Hawkins of the Virginia Tech swimming and diving program and Devin Carter of the Virginia Tech wrestling squad have been selected to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-District Men’s At-Large Team announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America. The Capital One Academic All-District At-Large Team recognizes the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom.
The Academic All-District teams include student-athlete that are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada. Hawkins and Carter are two of 11 student-athletes that were selected from District Three which includes the states: North Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.
This is the second academic honor for Hawkins this season, as the Charlotte, N.C., native was selected to the All-ACC Academic Team a week ago. The sophomore was named an All-American in the platform event at the NCAA Championships, while earning his first ACC title in the platform as well. He also just recently represented the United States in the FINA international Grand Prix tour, where he brought home a bronze medal in the synchronized platform event at the AT&T USA Diving Grand Prix. Hawkins will compete at the 2012 Olympic Trials in June.
Carter, a psychology major, won his second ACC wrestling title this year and went on to finish fifth at the NCAA Championships at 133 pounds, earning his first All-America honors. He was named the ACC Wrestler of the Year and the state wrestler of the year by VaSID. He was also named to the ACC Academic All-Wrestling squad and the NWCA All-Academic Team. This is the first CoSIDA academic recognition for Carter.
Both are now eligible for Academic All-America honors.
