Jeff Kinney was named the Associate Head Coach of the men’s soccer program after five seasons with Head Coach Mike Brizendine.

Kinney has worked tirelessly to rebuild the Hokies’ program after significant recruiting restrictions hampered the program. During his Tech career, Kinney has been directly responsible for all aspects of the program including; recruiting, managing the budget, training sessions and scheduling.

He also works closely with student-athletes in the classroom, helping them achieve academic success. In his time in Blacksburg, the program has been honored with the NSCAA Team Academic Award five times. Kinney also started a continuous learning leadership program for assistant coaches across the athletic department to receive training to help them with their career aspirations.   

In 2016 he helped to guide the Hokies to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament and a No. 8 NSCAA final ranking. During his time in Blacksburg, Kinney has helped develop four All-ACC selections and has seen two players from the program drafted by MLS; Devante Dubose and Juan Pablo Saavedra.

Before coming to Blacksburg, Kinney spent seven years as the top assistant coach at American University. While at American, he helped coach the Eagles to two outright Patriot League championships as well as a co-championship winning season. In 2004, the team made the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Kinney helped develop two Rookies of the Year and two Players of the Year. Kinney also coordinated all travel and game day logistics in addition to the recruiting process and ordering equipment.

At the club level, Kinney has served as the Technical Director of New River United and is responsible for all aspects pf club operations, which include development for all 21 travel teams. He also develops and oversees the club’s operational budget. 

With the D.C. United Academy, Kinney led the U-18 team to the 2009 national championship game with a record of 26-6-5. With United, he helped develop four current professionals in his first two years.

Prior to working with United, Kinney operated as the Director of Coaching at Reston Football Club where he was responsible for club operations. He lead the RFC ‘89s to a number seven national ranking as as the head coach.

Kinney has coached and developed 25 professional soccer players in America and abroad.

A 2003 graduate of American University where he featured on the Eagles’ back-to-back NCAA Tournament teams in 2001 and 2002, Kinney was honored as a two-time Patriot League Academic Honor Roll member and an Academic All-American.

Kinney is married to the former Kimberly Pardo and the couple has two twin boys, Finley and Bennett.
