BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech softball team dominated Hampton, sparking the run-rule in both games of the doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Tech Softball Park. The Hokies improve to 19-16 while the Lady Pirates slide to 12-19.
Tech hit three home runs, nine doubles, and eight singles to total 20 hits, resulting in 20 runs while only allowing a mere three runs in the pair of games. Chelsea Whitcomb slugged her third home run in three games while Olivia Lattin collected five RBI in game two.
With Lauren Duff’s four hits between the doubleheader, she extended her streak to 16 games, ranking second all-time.
Lattin earned her first win in the circle, tossing a complete game with six strikeouts to open the day.
Breanna Davenport and Caroline Schoenewald led off the game with back-to-back doubles, giving Tech the early 1-0 lead. Duff’s single loaded the bases before Kelsey Mericka drove in another run. Chelsea Whitcomb stepped up to the plate and slugged second homer in as many days, upping the score to 4-0.
The Hokies continued in the second as Emma Strouth doubled and crossed the plate before Caitlyn Nolan sent a sacrifice fly to center that drove in Kiara Ota. Duff batted in the final run of the inning on a double to left field.
Two walks and a double by Jessie Mehr set Ashley Kowalski up to walk in Tech’s eighth run of the day. Shoenewald finalized the Hokies’ score at nine as Mehr crossed the plate.
Hampton got on the board in the fourth off a double by Jada Fields that drove Hope Sobelewski home. The Lady Pirates hit another double late in the fifth inning but the Hokies held the runner back from scoring, clinching the 9-1 win.
Mikaela Aiken toed the rubber to start game two, throwing 3.0 complete innings to earn the win. Maggie Tyler closed out the final 2.0 frames with three strikeouts.
Mirroring the first game, the Hokies scored in the first inning as Nolan sent her second sacrifice fly of the day to center, allowing Lattin to score.
Tech tacked on two more runs in the second off two doubles and a home run. Whitcomb hit the leadoff double to center before Casey Gerhard followed suit, scoring Whitcomb. On the second pitch, Nolan sent a home run beyond the leftfield fence to drive in two more.
Hampton showed its fight in the third, putting two runs on the board. The Lady Pirates drew consecutive walks before both Diamond Ponds and Danielle Buddle singled, driving two runs home.
The Hokies answered back with three more runs in the bottom of the frame, led by Whicomb’s second 2-RBI home run of the day. Lattin drew an RBI-walk to up the score to 7-2.
Tech’s bats came alive in the fourth on two doubles by Duff and Mericka and two RBI-singles off the bats of Gerhard and Lattin. Lattin’s single drove in the final two runs of the game, securing the 11-2 victory.
Both Davenport and Lattin went 2-for-2 with two runs in the first and second games, respectively, as the Hokies’ leadoff batter.
Tech will take on James Madison on Wednesday for a 5 p.m. doubleheader to wrap up the eight-game home-stand at Tech Softball Park.
