Tech heads to Lexington for game with VMI
Hokies will sandwich Keydets' games, today and Tuesday, around a home ACC series with No. 9 Duke

This week for Tech: The Hokies will play just one midweek game this week, tonight in Lexington, Virginia against VMI, first pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. Starting Friday, Tech will welcome No. 9 Duke to English Field at Union Park for a three-game ACC series that concludes on Sunday. First pitches this weekend are 6 p.m. (Friday), 3 p.m. (Saturday) and 1 p.m. (Sunday). The weekend will be highlighted with the celebration of 125 seasons of Tech baseball with recognition of various players, coaches and eras of Hokies past.
Hokies versus VMI: In one of its oldest rivalries - the teams first played May 15, 1897, a Tech 18-1 win in Roanoke - Tech and VMI will play twice over the next six days, as Tech travels up to Lexington today and the Keydets will come to Blacksburg next Tuesday. The Hokies own the series with an overall mark of 128-48-1, which is the most wins Tech has against any other opponent. The next closest are Virginia (86 wins), William & Mary (81) and Richmond (70). Fragale heating up: Sam Fragale enters the day with an 11-game hitting streak – tied for the team-long this season with Luke Horanski, and one shy of tying his career-best of 12 done back in 2016. Over the stretch, he’s produced six multi-hit games, leads the team with 19 hits and a .404 batting average (raising his overall batting average from .229 to .279). He’s also slugging a team-best .723 in the past 11 games with a team-high four home runs and 15 RBI. He extended his streak on Sunday at Notre Dame with a ninth-inning RBI single.
The one-run games: This season, the Hokies are just 4-10 in one-run games which includes five of their last seven losses and three in walk-off fashion – at Virginia (April 8), at Radford (April 17) and at Notre Dame (April 21). Of note, Tech has outscored its opponents in the last 10 games 27-12 over the last three frames, which includes 13 ninth-inning runs, which forced extra-innings in that Radford and Notre Dame games.
