Tech quartet named to the All-ACC Academic Baseball Team

Sam Fragale highlights the squad as he is selected for the second straight year

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia Tech players Nick Anderson, Mac Caples, Connor Coward and Sam Fragale were among the 54 ACC student-athletes named to the 2017 All-ACC Academic Baseball Team as announced today by the league office.

With the four selections, it marks the 12th straight year the Hokies have had at least two members selected to the squad and it is the second-most ever – the 2007 team had a total of five Hokies make the team. Tech is one of six ACC schools this season to have at least four players selected to the team.

Fragale, a rising redshirt-senior from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, highlights the Hokies selections as he is chosen for the second straight year, becoming just the 10th Tech player to receive multiple honors. Coupled with his 2017 All-ACC Second Team selection, Fragale, a human nutrition, food and exercise major, becomes just the third Hokie to be named to both teams in the same season, first done by Ben Rowen (2010) and followed by Mark Zagunis (2012 & 2014).

Caples, a Midlothian, Virginia native who graduated from Tech with a degree in public relations, makes the team for the first time along with Anderson, a political science major who is a rising redshirt senior from San Diego, California, and Coward, a senior marketing major also from Pittsburgh.

The ACC’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year was Louisville’s Drew Ellis. The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year award was established in September 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports. Candidates for the award must have maintained a 3.0 grade point average for their career as well as a 3.0 for each of the last two semesters.

To be eligible for consideration for the All-ACC Academic team, a student-athlete, regardless of classification, must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his academic career. To view the entire team, CLICK HERE.
