Three Hokies make All-ACC Baseball Teams

Tom Stoffel and Sam Fragale are on the Second Team, while Jack Owens tabbed to Third Team

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Announced today by the Atlantic Coast Conference and voted on by the league’s 14 head coaches, a total of three Virginia Tech baseball players were named to the All-ACC Baseball team as Sam Fragale and Tom Stoffel made the Second Team and Jack Owens was selected to the Third Team.

Stoffel, a right fielder from Dayton, Ohio, had one of the best ever seasons for a Hokie during ACC play. In league-only play, the redshirt-junior’s .388 average was the fourth-best, his .636 slugging percentage was the best ever, and his .449 on-base percentage was fifth. Austin Wates’ 2009 season (.413/.625/.483) may have been the best of those numbers.

However, Stoffel’s 47 league-only hits trailed only Owen’s 48 this season, his 16 doubles were the most ever (by three), his 77 total bases were the most ever (by four) and his 30 RBI were one shy of the most – Rash, 31 (2013).

Stoffel also added a 0.00 ERA in 7.2 innings on the mound with seven strikeouts in league play, and a 2.45 ERA in 14.2 innings and 18 strikeouts overall. His batting numbers overall included leading the team with 21 doubles, which also led the conference and was 23rd in the NCAA. Stoffel was second on the team in hits (76), average (.342), RBI (49), total bases (125) and slugging percentage (.563). He also struck out once every 10 plate appearances, by far the best on the team.

Fragale, a first baseman from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, earns his second honor of the season from the league – he was named the ACC Player of the Week on February 20 – and third overall. The redshirt- junior was an All-Academic selection last year, while he makes the second team in 2017 with his bat.

Fragale finished third on the team in average at .310, but led the Hokies with a .615 slugging percentage, 15 home runs, 63 RBI and 12 sacrifice flies – which still leads the NCAA at the end of the regular season. He was also fifth in the conference, 36th in the nation in home runs and fourth and 17th in RBI.

Since the team joined the ACC back in 2005, Fragale’s RBIs were the second-most ever behind Ronnie Shaban’s 67 in 2010, his home runs were tied for second behind Andrew Rash’s 18 in 2011 and his slugging percentage was the third best.

Owens, a product of Burke, Virginia, becomes the first Tech second basemen to make a postseason team since Marc Tugwell earned back-to-back First Team honors in 2002-03 in the Big East.

In his first season at Tech, Owens led the team in at-bats (240, T-4th most in a season since 2005), runs scored (52, 8th best) and hits (86, T-3rd best). His 86 hits led the league and was the fourth most in the NCAA entering the postseason. In ACC-only games, his 138 at-bats and 48 hits are the most ever in a season, while his 26 runs were tied for fourth.
