RALEIGH, N.C. – In the final game of a three-game ACC series at Doak Field at Dail Park, the host team NC State Wolfpack registered a 14-2 victory over the Virginia Tech baseball team on Sunday afternoon, as the Wolfpack capitalized on three Hokie miscues.

NC State (25-20, 11-13 ACC) opened the game with two runs in the top of the first and then broke the game open in the second with a six spot. With two outs in the inning, the Wolfpack loaded the bases, then drew back-to-back walks – which brought home two – while a wild pitch scored a third.

The Wolfpack continued the frame by adding three more runs after a Tech error and took a seven-run lead. In both the fifth and seventh innings, NC State put three runs on the board, four of which were unearned, and increased its advantage to 14-1.

Tech (20-26, 8-16 ACC) managed just five hits in the contest, including two in the second frame when the Hokies plated their first run. With one out in the inning, Sam Fragale doubled and scored on a two-out single by Garrett Hudson.

In the ninth, Stevie Mangrum hit a pinch-hit solo home run to provide the final run for the Hokies. It was his second pinch-hit home run of the season, and his team-leading fourth pinch-hit of the year.

Inside the box score

  • Fragale: double, 10th of the season, 25th of his career.
  • Mangrum: home run, third of the season/career.
  • Jack Owens: single in fifth, 70th hit of the season, second in the ACC behind Virginia’s Adam Haseley (71); 36 hits in ACC-only play, second in the ACC to teammate Tom Stoffel’s 39.

More Tech notes

  • The Hokies hit their 74th home run of the year, the second most ever in an ACC season at the school, trailing the 2010 squad that hit 81.
  • Since 1988, only five Tech teams hit more than 70 in a single season and the 74 this year are tied for the third most in that time period, with the 1999 squad.
  • Tech is now currently tied for first in the nation in home runs with Wake Forest.

Up next

  • The Hokies will stay on the road for their next contest before taking a week off for exams. The Tuesday game in Buies Creek, North Carolina against Campbell is scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. first pitch.
