Tech wins second ACC series of season with 10-5 victory over Eagles

Hokies hit four more home runs while Tom Stoffel ties career-high with 5 RBI

BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech baseball team took an early three-run lead on Boston College and responded in the home half of the frame every time the Eagles scored and registered a 10-6 victory on Saturday afternoon in ACC action at English Field at Union Park.

With the win, Tech (16-13, 5-6 ACC) secured its second ACC series win of the season – the Hokies also took a series from Florida State – and will go for the sweep on Sunday afternoon.

Tom Stoffel, who tied his career high with five RBI, plated the first run of the game with a sacrifice fly in the first and Sam Fragale added an RBI one batter later to give Tech a 2-0 lead after the first.

Fragale knocked in two more in the fifth on a two-run home run, his team-leading 12thh home run of the season and giving him 43 RBI for the season, that gave Tech a 6-3 lead. Entering the day, he was tied for the conference lead in both categories. The 12 home runs are the most by a Hokie since Tyler Horan hit 15 in 2012.

Boston College (8-16, 1-10 ACC) answered back in the top of the sixth with two of its own as Donovan Casey and Johnny Adams each knocked in a run.

However, Joe Freiday, Jr. hit a solo home run and Stoffel added a three-run home run in the home half of the sixth to put some more distance between the two teams.

Stoffel then took the mound and tossed two scoreless innings and Aaron McGarity closed out the ninth to help Nick Anderson pick up his team-high tying fifth win of the season.

More Tech notes

• Hit four home runs and now have 56 for the season. The Hokies led the nation in home runs entering the weekend, just ahead of Wake Forest (48). The 56 home runs are the most hit by a Tech team since the 2011 squad hit 60. The most home runs hit by the Hokies in a single season while a member of the ACC was 81 back in 2010.
• Were hit by four pitches on the day to push season total to 52. The Hokies were third in the nation coming into the weekend in HBPs, trailing leader Louisiana Tech (55).
• Improved to 16-5 overall against Boston College all-time in Blacksburg, including 11 straight at home, dating back to the 2010 season.
