Hokies win series over FSU with Sunday rout

Nick Anderson throws eight scoreless innings in 17-0 victory

BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech baseball team used a 10-run sixth inning to turn a one-run lead into an 11-0 advantage and Nick Anderson held No. 1 Florida State to just five hits and no runs over eight frames as the Hokies won the ACC series over the Seminoles with a 17-0 victory at English Field at Union Park on Sunday.

The series win is the third for the Hokies over Florida State since 2010 and is Tech’s 11th overall series win over a ranked opponent as a member of the ACC. The team’s last series win over a ranked foe was in 2015, when Tech swept No. 1 Virginia in Blacksburg.

In the third, Tech plated its first run off the bat of Tom Stoffel – an RBI single that brought home Rahiem Cooper, who doubled with one out and moved to third on a wild pitch.

That’s all the run support Anderson would need as he allowed just two baserunners after the fourth, settling down after a bit of a shaky second frame.

Florida State (14-7, 3-3 ACC) loaded the bases with one out but a liner to second and a grounder to second ended the threat. In the fourth, leadoff back-to-back singles were erased by a double play and one of Anderson’s five strikeouts. No Seminole reached second base the rest of the way.

For good measure, Tech sent 14 men to the plate in the sixth and every Hokie in the lineup scored in the frame, including Sam Fragale, who did it twice. His ninth home run of the year, a two-run shot gave Tech the 11-0.

Tech (13-9, 3-3 ACC) used a six-run seventh to put the game away, highlighted by JD Mundy’s third home run of the spring, a three-run blast.

More Tech notes

• Turned one double play and now have 29 for the season. The Hokies were leading the country entering the weekend (New Mexico had 23). It was the fifth GDP turned behind Anderson this season.
• Hit two home runs, the 11th time this season the team has hit at least two in a game and are 8-3 in such games. The team was also tied for first in the nation entering the weekend in home runs hit (have now hit 37) with fellow ACC school Wake Forest. The 37 home runs are the most hit by the team since the 2013 squad hit 55.
• Scored 10-plus runs for the sixth time this season (5-1) and are 13-2 this season when scoring six or more.
• Improved to 6-4 in the last 10 games against Florida State, including 5-2 outside of Tallahassee, Florida. Overall, the Hokies are 6-10 against the Seminoles in Blacksburg,
• Improved to 8-21 when playing a No. 1-ranked team, which includes a 7-13 mark in Blacksburg. Tech baseball is the only sport to beat a No. 1 team in the last three years and the Hokies have done it five times.
• Has now won three of its last four ACC home-opening weekends, and are a combined 9-3 in those series.
• Has now scored at least three or more runs in an inning 24 times. The last time the Hokies scored more than 10 in one inning was at Old Dominion (Feb. 27, 2016) when they scored 11 in the fourth.
• The 17-0 win was the most runs scored in a shutout ever in an ACC game and the most since an 18-0 victory versus VMI on May 2, 2012.
• This was only the eighth shutout recorded by Tech pitching against ACC competition since the team joined the league.
• The largest win before today in ACC play that included a shutout was an 11-0 win over Maryland on April 20, 2013.
• It also marks the largest win ever in an ACC game for the Hokies
