Nick Anderson is stellar on the mound, but suffers the loss

BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech starting pitcher Nick Anderson tossed a career-high eight innings and struck out a career-high tying six batters, but a Hokies miscue in the third inning allowed two unearned runs to cross the plate and Binghamton held on for a 2-1 victory on Sunday afternoon at English Field at Union Park.

Anderson scattered six hits and two walks over those eight frames and showed his mettle in the seventh, when a leadoff double turned into a runner on third with just one out. Anderson struck out the next two batters and tossed a perfect eighth to keep the Hokies within striking distance.

However, it was Anderson who picked up the only Tech RBI in the contest, as he plated Ryan Tufts with a two-out single to center in the fourth. Twice Sam Fragale looked to tie the score with the long ball only to see the Bearcats make the play on the warning track.

Tech also threatened in the bottom of the seventh when Garrett Hudson doubled with two outs - the Hokies' only extra-base hit of the game. Joe Freiday, Jr. followed with a single through the left side, but Binghamton left fielder Darian Herncane threw out Hudson trying to score to end the threat.
