Newly-ranked Hokies entertain Radford on Tuesday

BLACKSBURG – After starting the season 4-0 and then taking 3-of-4 on the road at Nevada to improve to 7-1 on the season, the Virginia Tech baseball team has continued to receive national attention and on Monday, Collegiate Baseball had the Hokies ranked in its top 25, entering the poll at No. 19 - CLICK HERE to view release.

It wasn’t the only recognition from the organization this week, or this season, as Tech has had two straight weeks in which Collegiate Baseball has named a Hokie to its National Players of the Week list. Rahiem Cooper got the nod this week which was highlighted by his three-home run (including two grand slams) and 9-RBI performance against the Wolf Pack on Sunday. Sam Fragale earned the honor after the opening weekend of the year (CLICK HERE to see his release).

The Hokies are also receiving votes in the latest National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Top 25. Of note, the Collegiate Baseball newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll and Its birth took place during the 1959 college baseball season. The ranking of 19th is the highest the school has been ranked since the final week of the 2013 season when Tech climbed to as high as No. 16.

The Hokies will put their newly ranked squad into action this week with five home games at English Field at Union Park. Tech welcomes Radford for one game this afternoon with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m.

All-time, Tech is 42-14 against the Highlanders but will look to end a losing skid as Radford has won the last two and four of the last five in the series. Prior to that the Hokies had an eight-game winning streak and 19-of-20. All-time at home, Tech holds a 23-3 advantage.

The Hokies will then play a four-game series against Binghamton this weekend with the series beginning on Friday with another 3 p.m. first pitch.
