RENO, Nev. – Virginia Tech centerfielder Rahiem Cooper smacked three home runs including two grand slams to lead the Hokies to a 24-10 win over Nevada on Sunday afternoon in nonconference action at Peccole Park, which helped the Hokies secure the 3-1 weekend series win.
In all, Tech hit six home runs in the game, with Cooper starting the onslaught with his first grand slam in the second inning that gave his team a 4-0 lead. In the third, Ryan Tufts hit a solo shot and Sam Fragale added a two-run home run before Cooper led off the fourth with his own solo home run.
It was in the fifth, though, when he made history, hitting the first pitch he saw over the left field fence for his second grand slam of the day which put Tech up, at the time, 19-1.
Cooper became the first Tech player to hit two grand slams in the same game (in recorded history) and the second Hokie with a three-home run game this season. He also becomes just the second ACC player to ever hit two grand slams in the same game, joining Virginia’s Steve Cunha, who hit two versus Maryland on April 28, 1990.
His nine RBIs are the most for a Tech player since Brad Bauder had 14 in a 35-4 victory at Georgetown on April 21, 2002, which was also the last time Tech scored 24 or more runs in a single game.
Nick Anderson improved to 2-0 on the mound for the Hokies in 2017, while he also added a 3-for-5 day with two RBIs and a team-high five runs scored.
With the win, the Hokies improved to 7-1 overall, their best start since the 2013 season, while the Wolf Pack drop their record to 2-6.
