History versus the Wolf Pack and the MWC: The Hokies have faced Nevada twice in program history - during a six-game tournament at Fresno State during the 1995 season. Tech beat the Wolf Pack 10-5 in the first meeting and lost 12-9 in the second. Nevada is a member of the Mountain West Conference, and overall, the Hokies have only played six games all-time against current members of the MWC with a 4-2 mark. They are 2-1 against Fresno State and 1-0 versus Wyoming, who they also beat in that same tournament. That 1995 tournament was the last time Tech faced a current team in the MWC.
Fast start to the season: In the last 50 seasons, the Hokies have started the season 4-0 just 10 times and six of those times the team won their next game to get to 5-0. Only the 1987 team was able to win its first six games and actually went 8-0 before its first loss.
In the previous nine seasons when Tech opened with four straight wins, the team finished the season at least 10 games over .500 and seven of those squads won at least 32 games. The only teams that did not were in 1978 (27-17) and 1969 (27-7).
Fragale off to hot start, gets recognition: Sam Fragale’s 2017 Opening Day performance included three home runs in his first three at bats and a 5-for-5 day with a double and triple and a career-high seven RBIs. He became the first Tech player with a three-home run game since Chris Kay (May 10, 2009 vs. Delaware State) and is just the fifth Hokie with seven RBIs in a single game since Virginia Tech joined the ACC. It was also the most total bases for a Tech player (17) since Brad Bauder set the school record with 23 at Georgetown (April 21, 2002).
For his effort, he was the ACC’s Player of the Week and was named one of Collegiate Baseball’s National Players of the Week. He was also one of three nominated for the “Gold Standard Performance of the Week!” as recognized by USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award.
Bullpen posting zeros: Tech’s bullpen deserves some credit for the team’s 4-0 start. Overall, the relief pitchers have combined for a 2-0 record with a save, one earned run allowed over 15 innings and struck out 17 batters. The Hokies bullpen has held the opposition scoreless over its past 10.1 innings of work.
