ESPN3 Video, Sunday: CLICK HERE The weekend series: For the first time since April 19, 2008, Tech will have a baseball game at home on the same day as the Spring Football Game. The Hokies ACC weekend against Duke starts off with its second game of the year at Pulaski’s Calfee Park with a 6 p.m. start, with Game 2 and Game 3 being played at English Field at Union Park. Saturday’s game will start at 5:30 p.m. and Sunday is scheduled for a 1 p.m. first pitch.
History versus the Blue Devils: Tech and Duke have played each other 57 times with the Blue Devils holding a 33-24 mark in the overall series. The numbers as ACC members and in Blacksburg also slightly favor Duke - 19-14 in ACC and 13-9 at Tech, including an 11-4 mark at English Field at Union Park. The Blue Devils have won seven straight in Blacksburg - with the last Hokies win an 18-8 victory on May 15, 2010.
Coward gets the start: Sophomore Connor Coward has been penciled in to get the start on Saturday. This will be his first start in an ACC game and just his fifth start overall. In his four career starts, Coward has gone 1-0 with a 5.16 ERA in 19.2 innings. He has struck out 12 and allowed nine walks and 11 earned runs. He is coming off a career-best ACC outing of 5.0 innings pitched and seven strikeouts in a relief appearance on Sunday versus Pitt.
Jenco getting the offense started: This season, Saige Jenco has reached base to start the Hokies’ first inning 18 times (in 33 starts) and has reached base in every start this season, except one at some point in the game. The 18 times also includes nine times in the last 11 games. However, after scoring a run six of the first seven times he reached base in the first frame (Tech was 5-2 in those games which included winning the first four), Jenco has only managed to cross the plate three times in the last 11 occurrences.
Kragel gets rare freshman wins: Freshman relief pitcher Cole Kragel became just the ninth Hokie true freshman to pick up a win in ACC play when he finished off the victory at UNC on April 10. Those nine freshmen did it 13 times, with five victories coming from starters and eight picked up by relievers, which includes his teammates Luke Scherzer (2 in 2014), Connor Coward (1 in 2015) and Chris Monaco (1 in 2015). Packy Naughton won a game as a starter last year at Duke.
With his relief win versus Pitt on April 15, Kragel joined Scherzer and Mathew Price (2 as a starter in 2009) as multiple winners in ACC games as true freshmen, while Justin Wright (2 as a starter and 1 in relief) holds the record for most ACC wins by a true freshman with three.
