BLACKSBURG – A three-run rally in the ninth and a single unearned run in the 10th helped the Virginia Tech baseball team register a 4-3 walk-off victory over Radford on Tuesday night at English Field.

Trailing 3-0 entering the home half of the ninth, Max Ponzurick hit a two-run home run to cut the Hokies' deficit to one and Matt Dauby launched a two-out, solo shot to knot the score and send it to extras.

In the 10th, Tom Stoffel drew a two-out walk, moved to third on Phil Sciretta’s single and scored on an error by the Highlander third baseman Chris Coia, who could not handle a Ponzurick grounder. Ponzurick beat the throw and Stoffel scored for the win.

Aaron McGarity got the win out of the bullpen, improving to 1-0 this season. Daniel Bridgeman dropped to 0-2 after allowing all four of the Hokies’ runs.

How the runs were scored

• Radford (1-7) scored two unearned runs in the sixth with Adam Whitacre and Luke Wise coming home and Shane Johnsonbaugh collecting an RBI.
• The Highlanders cushioned their lead in the top of the ninth on an RBI double by Danny Hrbek, scoring Johnsonbaugh.
• Tech (5-3) got on board in the ninth after Sciretta drew a leadoff walk and Ponzurick hit his blast. With two outs, Dauby tied the game with his home run.
• Stoffel scored from third with two outs after Ponzurick’s grounder to third could not be handled and then beat the throw to first.

Inside the Box

• Sciretta extended his hitting streak to eight games with a single in the first. He would single in extra innings for his sixth multi-hit game of the season, 24th of his career.
• Ponzurick registered his third straight game with at least two RBIs. The home run was the second of his career, second in three games.
• Dauby hit his second career home run as well. His first was hit almost exactly two years ago – March 2, 2014 against UMass Lowell.
• Jenco failed to get on base, ending his reached-base streak at 27 straight games.
• Andrew McDonald tossed a career-high 5.1 innings in his fourth career start – which Tech has won the last three.
• Connor Coward has thrown 6.2 scoreless innings this season with nine strikeouts. In the game, he allowed his first hit of the year to the 23rd batter he’s faced.
• McGarity has not allowed an earned run in 6.0 innings this season with 12 strikeouts. In his career in relief, he’s tossed 48.1 innings in 25 appearances, and struck out 45 and holds a 2.05 ERA.

Additional Notes

• Tech now holds a 42-12 overall mark against Radford, including a 23-3 record at home. The two teams will play two more times this year.
• The win ended a two-game losing streak to the Highlanders.
• The Hokies are 17-2 all-time on this date, have won 10 in a row and are 7-0 overall at home.
• Tech has now won eight straight games at English Field dating back to last season.
• This was the ninth walk-off win for the Hokies under third-year head coach Patrick Mason. Ironically, the first was on March 1, 2014 – a 4-3 win in 11 innings versus UMass Lowell.

Tech continues an 11-game homestand with a four-game weekend series against Quinnipiac. The first contest is set for a 5:30 p.m. first pitch on Friday.
