PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Pittsburgh pitching staff again silenced the Virginia Tech Hokies’ bats as the Panthers registered a 7-0 victory in ACC action Friday night at Charles L. Cost Field and claimed the series over Tech. However, the Hokies are stil alive for the ACC postseason championship.

Pittsburgh (20-31, 9-20 ACC) scored all the runs the team needed with one swing of the bat in the first inning. With the bases loaded and two outs, Ron Sherman hit a bases-clearing triple then came home on a Jordan Frabasilio single that made it 4-0 after one inning.

The Panthers added an unearned run in the third and padded their lead with two more in the fourth with an RBI triple by Charles Leblanc and an RBI single by Boo Vazquez that completed their scoring.

Tech (26-26, 12-16 ACC) only threatened to score once in the game and that was in the top of the seventh. Brendon Hayden reached on a one-out error, which was followed by an Erik Payne single and a Sean Keselica walk.

However, Pitt starter T.J. Zeuch got out of the jam with a strikeout and a grounder back to himself that ended the frame. Zeuch improved to 5-6 with the win on the mound and, in the earlier frames, was helped by a pair of double plays turned behind him.

In a relief effort, Jon Woodcock struck out eight batters in seven innings. Keselica was the only Hokie with two hits, and was on base three times adding a walk to his evening.

The two teams will conclude the three-game ACC series with the final game on Saturday with a 1 p.m. start. A win by Tech will secure a spot in the ACC postseason.
