BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech baseball extended its season-long winning streak to seven straight games in dominant fashion on Tuesday night, as the Hokies scored in every inning from the second through the sixth and claimed the 13-3 victory over West Virginia in nonconference action Tuesday night at English Field.
The winning streak, tied for the fifth longest active streak in the country, has improved the Hokies overall record to 26-24 while the Mountaineers drop their overall record to 24-23.
Saige Jenco was the catalyst for the Tech offense on the night as he went 3-for-4 with a career-high six RBIs. He knocked in three with a bases-loaded triple in the second that turned a 1-1 game in the Hokies’ favor. He also had an RBI triple in the eighth, which tied the school record for most triples in a single game – last done by teammate Alex Perez on Feb 21 of this year.
Joe Freiday, Jr., also enjoyed a career night, as he went 3-for-5, his first career three-hit game, with a pair of doubles, and crossed the plate four times. Only Perez, twice, and Erik Payne have scored four times in a single game this season before tonight.
Brendon Hayden (one RBI, two runs), Payne (two RBIs, two runs) and Sean Keselica (two RBIs, one run) each had two hits in the game, while every Tech starter had at least a run scored or an RBI. Payne got his two RBIs on a two-run home run in the third, his seventh of the year.
On the mound for the Hokies was Jon Woodcock, who tossed his team-high fifth quality start of the season. He allowed a single unearned run in the second and a solo home run in the fourth, but threw seven innings and struck out three. He improved to 3-2 with the win, while Luke Scherzer tossed an inning and struck out three and Aaron McGarity closed the game with a scoreless ninth and one strikeout.
The Hokies currently have a three-game ACC series at Pittsburgh left on their regular season schedule. Those games are set to take place next Thursday through Saturday, May 14-16.
