BLACKSBURG – Just a few days before seniors are recognized at English Field, a pair of them cemented their names in the Virginia Tech baseball history books in the Hokies’ 13-4 victory over Appalachian State in nonconference action Tuesday evening.
Erik Payne tied a school record set more than 50 years ago when he drew a walk each of the five times he came to the plate in the game. Wayne Taylor first set the record of five bases on balls on March 24, 1964 versus Michigan State. The NCAA record is seven walks in a single game (Teddy Craig, UALR, May 2, 1992), but Payne did tie the ACC record as well.
Also on the night, Brendon Hayden became the newest member of the Tech 200-career hit club when he singled to lead off the fifth inning. It was part of a three-hit, two-run night for the senior.
Saige Jenco also had a three-hit night while driving in three and despite not getting a hit, Rahiem Cooper (HBP and reached on an error) and Alex Perez (two BBs) each scored twice, while Payne scored three times and actually had two RBIs.
Appalachian State (13-32) held a 1-0 lead after the top half of the second and took a 3-1 lead when Michael Pierson and Matt Brill each hit a solo home run in the third inning.
However, after that, Tech’s pitching staff settled in. Connor Coward, who got the start on the mound, tossed five frames and struck out four to improve to 2-0 on the mound. Jon Woodcock pitched three scoreless innings out of the pen and struck out two, while Luis Collazo worked the ninth, allowing a run and notching a strikeout.
An RBI single by Joe Freiday, Jr. in the second tied the game at 1-1 and Tech took a 4-3 lead it would not relinquish in the third by plating three unearned runs. They managed to push five across in the fourth, with a key two-RBI single coming off the bat of Sean Keselica.
The Hokies (21-24) will be back in action on Wednesday, as they have added a game to the schedule. Tech will welcome NC A&T to English Field for a game with a 5:30 p.m. first pitch.
