DURHAM, N.C. – Brendon Hayden drove in all three runs for the Virginia Tech baseball team, but it was the host Duke Blue Devils who posted the ACC victory on Friday night as they captured the 6-3 win to open the ACC series at Jack Coombs Field.
Hayden opened the scoring in the second inning with a lead-off home run, his 10th of the season and the 23rd of the senior’s Tech career. However, when he singled home two in the eighth frame with a single through the right side – scoring Mac Caples and Alex Perez – the Hokies were trailing 6-1 at the time.
Duke (23-18, 6-15 ACC) got two of its run on a Mike Rosenfeld home run in the third and then turned a 3-1 advantage into a five-run lead in the seventh on a bases-loaded double by Jalen Phillips.
The Blue Devils also got a quality start from Andrew Istler, who after the Hayden homer, retired 14 straight batters before walking the bases loaded in sixth with two outs. However, he got out of the jam with a grounder back to himself to end the threat.
Istler improved to 4-3 with the victory, while Kenny Koplove earned his eighth save of the season with a perfect ninth. Kit Scheetz, who went 5.2 innings and allowed three runs, dropped his record to 2-2.
Tech (19-23, 8-13 ACC) will look to even the ACC series on Saturday with the second game at Jack Coombs Field with a Noon start time – a change from its original time.
