BLACKSBURG – For the fourth time this season, the Virginia Tech baseball team registered a walk-off victory, with Saturday’s 9-8 win coming as a result of a Georgia Tech error and the Hokies evened the ACC series with the Yellow Jackets at English Field at one game apiece.
Trailing by a run entering the bottom of the ninth, Erik Payne started the rally with a one-out single back through the middle. With two outs, Mac Caples drew a walk, which brought Sean Keselica to the plate.
Already with three hits – two doubles – and three RBIs, Keselica laced a single into left center that score Payne and moved Caples – the winning run – the third. It was Keselica’s second career four-hit day and four-RBI game (one shy of his career high of five RBIs).
On a 1-0 pitch, Andrew Mogg grounded a ball to Yellow Jacket second baseman Wade Bailey, who first looked to try and tag Keselica but then decided to toss to get him at second.
The ball hit Keselica in the back as Caples crossed the plate and the Hokies got the win to even the series and their ACC record at 7-7, while improving to 17-15 overall. The loss dropped Georgia Tech to 20-11 overall and 6-8 in the ACC.
Virginia Tech opened the scoring in the second when Keselica, with the bases loaded, cleared them with a double, but Georgia Tech answered right back with three of its own in the top of the third.
The Hokies reclaimed their lead with two in the fifth – RBI single by Payne that scored Rahiem Cooper, who tripled, and a bases loaded RBI hit by pitch for Caples – but the Yellow Jackets answered again with four in the sixth.
In the seventh, the game was again tied after Brendon Hayden singled home Alex Perez with his second run of the afternoon and Payne scored the second of his three runs on a double play ball to make it 7-7.
Aaron McGarity was then called upon, making his first appearance of the season out of the bullpen and worked a perfect eighth before the Yellow Jackets got the go-ahead run in the ninth off the bat of Bailey.
His error, though, in the bottom half of the inning proved to be the difference.
McGarity picked up the win and is now 3-3 on the season. Jon Woodcock got the start, went five innings and had five strikeouts. Zac Ryan, Georgia Tech’s seventh pitcher used in the game, took the loss, his first of the season and is now 5-1.
The two teams will play the rubber match on Sunday at English Field with a 1 p.m. first pitch.
