BLACKSBURG – Logan Bible tied a career high by knocking in three runs and Kit Scheetz earned his first win on the mound as the Virginia Tech baseball team registered an 8-3 victory over East Tennessee State University on Wednesday night in nonconference action at English Field.
With the win, the Hokies have now won three straight and have improved their record to 14-12 overall while ETSU dropped to 11-12 on the season.
ETSU started the game by plating a pair of first-inning runs thanks to Trey York, who hit an RBI triple that scored Chris Cook, and then he came home on a grounder by Hagen Owenby.
The Hokies responded with a single run in the first – RBI double by Brendon Hayden that scored Rahiem Cooper – and two in the second, as Bible and Saige Jenco picked up RBIs that brought home Mac Caples and Ryan Tufts, and gave Tech a 3-2 lead.
The Buccaneers answered in the top of the third with York notching his second RBI of the evening on a single that plated Cook, again, and tied the game. Kevin Phillips followed with a single to put ETSU runners on first and second.
Owenby then lined a ball into the right-centerfield gap and, even though there were no outs, both Buccaneers were running on the play and were near third base when Cooper dove and caught the ball. He threw the ball to Erik Payne, who relayed it to Alex Perez at second for the second out. Perez tossed the ball went over to first to Hayden to complete the Hokies’ first triple play as a member of the ACC.
Payne put the Hokies back on top in the home half of the inning with an RBI single that scored Perez, his 30th run of the season.
Tech, then, increased its lead in the seventh as the Hokies turned a costly ETSU error into four runs. Payne and Andrew Mogg both brought home one run and with two outs, Bible hit a two-RBI single to center that pushed the Tech lead to 8-3.
Kit Scheetz (1-0) earned the win for the Hokies after tossing seven innings, allowing three earned runs and striking out four batters. Griffin Krieg took the loss and his record dropped to 1-2. Chris Monaco threw the final two innings for Tech, retiring all six batters he faced.
Tech heads out on the road for its next three games, traveling to Tallahassee, Florida to face the seventh-ranked Florida State Seminoles in a three-game ACC series starting on Friday at 6 p.m.
