BLACKSBURG – A nine-run fourth inning helped the Virginia Tech baseball team turn an early deficit into a rout as the Hokies went on to defeat the Radford Highlanders 18-8 in nonconference action at English Field Wednesday evening.
The 18 runs scored were the most by the Hokies since the team beat VMI 18-0 in Blacksburg on May 2, 2012, while the 19 hits they pounded out were the most since collecting 20 hits against Wagner in a 14-2 win, also in Blacksburg.
Radford (9-10) actually took a six-run lead in the top of the second inning with the big hit being a grand slam home run off the bat of Patrick Marshall. It’s the sixth grand slam the Tech pitching staff has surrendered this season.
The Hokies, though, answered back with three runs in the home half of the frame before exploding for the nine spot in the fourth, as they took a 12-6 lead and never looked back. They added two in the seventh and four in the eighth to provide their final runs of the game.
Tech had five players with multi-hit games, led by Sam Fragale’s four-hit, three-run, three-RBI night that included a three-run triple. Saige Jenco (double, 2 runs 2 RBIs), Alex Perez (triple, 2 runs, 3 RBIs) and Andrew Mogg (double, 2 runs, 2 RBIs) each had three hits, while Rahiem Cooper (3 runs, 3 RBIs) had a pair of singles.
For Perez, his triple in the seventh was his fourth of the season, but more importantly the 11th of his Tech career, which ties him for fifth place on the school’s all-time list – with Franklin Stubbs, Tim Buheller and Chris Hutchison.
Picking up his first collegiate win on the mound was Luis Collazo, who came in for relief of Perez and worked 1.2 innings and allowed just one run. The rest of the pen – Connor Coward (1.2), Packy Naughton (1.0) and Luke Scherzer (1.0) combined to allow just two hits and one run the rest of the night.
Tech (11-10) will take a day off before welcoming Clemson to Blacksburg for a three-game ACC series starting on Friday at 5:30 p.m. at English Field.
