The weekend series: Tech opens up ACC play this weekend with a three-game set in Winston-Salem, North Carolina against Wake Forest. Started back in 1911, the Demon Deacons hold a 44-38 edge in the all-time series including a 26-16 mark in games at home. The Hokies, though, have won two straight and three of the last four.

Tech in ACC opening weekends: Now in its 11th season in the conference, Tech is 2-8 in opening series weekends in the league and that includes facing six ranked teams in its previous 10 openers, including at No. 15 Clemson last year. The team opened the 2007 and 2010 seasons with series wins. This weekend will also mark the ninth time the Hokies will open league play on the road.

In ACC opening games, the Hokies are 3-7, winning games in 2007, 2009, and 2012. All-time, after the opening weekend, Tech is a combined 8-22.

Perez is the nation’s Ironman: Entering the weekend, senior Alex Perez is just one of five players in Division I baseball to have started in every one of his team’s games since stepping foot on campus. Perez’ 182 consecutive starts is currently the longest streak in the nation and is the longest streak to start a career at Tech. Of his 182 starts at Tech, 130 have been at second base, 49 have been at shortstop and three have been on the mound.

Starting pitching solid through three weekends: Despite the Hokies’ 6-6 record, Tech’s starting pitching has been solid for the team since the start of the season. The overall staff ERA is 2.81, but the starters have combined for a 1.66 ERA in 76 innings pitched (6.1 IP per start). The starters have also struck out a combined 63 batters opposed to 13 walks and are hitting just .167 against them. Starters have not allowed an earned run in the last 40 innings pitched.

Checking the national rankings: It’s early, but some Hokies are currently ranked in the top 25 in the nation in several categories. Perez is third in triples (2), fifth in runs scored (18) and 21st in walks (12). Ricky Surum is seventh in sacrifice bunts (4) and Brendon Hayden is 25th in home runs (3). Jon Woodcock is 24th in WHIP (0.55) and 25th in strikeouts (24).
