MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – In the final game of a four-game set with Toledo at The Ripken Experience, Ebbotts Field, Sunday morning, Virginia Tech defeated the Rockets 9-3 to claim the series three games to one.
After playing 19 innings Saturday and only being able to scrape across one run – on Erik Payne’s two-out bases-loaded walk-off single in the 10th of Game 1 of a doubleheader – the Hokies put their foot on the gas in the first frame and scored six runs en route to their victory.
The first five Tech batters, and 10 of the first 11, reached base, as the Hokies drew five walks in the inning. Sean Keselica got the first RBI with a bases-loaded walk and Miguel Ceballos brought in another with a sacrifice fly.
An error by Toledo third baseman John Martillotta allowed the inning to continue and with the bases loaded, Andrew Mogg cleared the bags with a double to make it 5-0. For good measure, Alex Perez drew a bases-loaded walk to bring in Mogg for the sixth run.
That was plenty of run support needed for Tech starter Jon Woodcock, who improved to 2-0 on the season after tossing seven innings (tying his career high), allowing one hit and no runs, and striking out a career-high nine batters.
In the series, the Hokies’ starting pitchers combined to throw 30 innings, strike out 25 batters, walk just two and surrendered no earned runs. Overall, the staff’s ERA was 0.73 for the weekend.
Brendon Hayden added a two-run home run in the seventh that scored Payne and Perez homered in the bottom of the eighth to provide the final offense for the Hokies.
Toledo (3-7) got its runs off Tech’s bullpen, scoring two in the eighth when Matt Hansen beat out a double-play ball with the bases loaded that scored Jordan Kesson and an error allowed the other to cross the plate. Tyler Baar hit a solo home run in the ninth to end the scoring.
Tech (6-5) will return to Blacksburg and will look to open its home slate with a pair of midweek games against the College of Charleston. The teams are scheduled to play both at English Field Tuesday and Wednesday with a start time of 5:30 p.m. for each.
