MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Virginia Tech baseball team defeated Toledo 9-1 at The Ripken Experience, Griffith Field, Friday afternoon in nonconference action and it was in part to three of its seniors, Alex Perez and Brendon Hayden at the plate, and Sean Keselica on the mound.
Perez and Hayden combined to register six of the nine RBIs in the game and score five times, while Keselica continued to impress on the mound, tossing seven scoreless innings with four strikeouts.
Keselica picked up his first win of the year with the outing – he now stands at 1-1 – as he scattered six hits and did not walk a batter. His numbers through three starts in 2015 are 17 innings pitched, 13 strikeouts, three walks and a 1.06 ERA.
Perez, who is leading the Hokies in both slugging and on-base percentage, increased his OPS to 1.142 as he drew three walk and also tripled for the third time this season, 10th time in his career. He scored four times – the second time this season he’s done that as he pushed his season total to 15 – and drove in two with that triple, in the second inning.
Hayden knocked Perez in with an RBI double in the first to get the Hokies on the board, then with a 6-0 lead, notched his 14th career home run – a three-run shot that made it 9-0. When Hayden crossed the plate, it marked his 100th career RBI at Tech.
Tech (4-4) also saw Erik Payne and Phil Sciretta bang out a pair of hits each, while pitcher Connor Coward closed the game on the mound – his first collegiate action. He struck out two and walked two in his two innings.
Toledo (2-5) managed to avoid the shutout when AJ Montoya hit a solo home run in the eighth frame. The Rockets’ starter Cameron Palmer took the loss and is now (1-2). He pitched five innings, allowed seven hits, six runs (two earned) and struck out six.
The two teams will continue the four-game series on Saturday with a doubleheader schedule for a 1 p.m. start at the same location – The Ripken Experience – but on Ebbotts Field.
