BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Alex Perez tied his own school and ACC record by notching a pair of triples in a single game and the second one led to the game-deciding run, as the Virginia Tech baseball team registered a 6-5 victory over Campbell in nonconference action at Jim Perry Stadium Saturday afternoon.

With the game tied at 5-5 and with two outs in the ninth, Perez laced a pitch into right field and as he finished off his stand-up triple, a throw by Camels’ second baseman Austin Bears toward third base sailed into his team’s dugout which awarded Perez home.

Luke Scherzer then came into the game and pitched a scoreless ninth, allowing a one-out single, but closed the door, picking up his second save of the year and helping Tech improve to 3-1 on the season.

The Hokies got on the board in the first frame on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Erik Payne, which scored Perez who reached base with his first triple of the contest.

Then in the third, with the game knotted at 1-1, Tech used a pair of Campbell errors to push four unearned runs across the plate. Ricky Surum, who reached on an error, scored on an errant throw on a fielder’s choice, which was then followed by an RBI double by Payne, an RBI groundout by Brendon Hayden and an RBI single by Phil Sciretta.

Campbell (3-1) continued to make the Hokies pay for their own defensive miscues as one error in the third allowed one run to score and another in the fourth saw the Camels plate two to make it a 5-4 contest. They tied that game in the seventh on an RBI single by Anthony Lopez – their first earned run of the contest.

Sean Keselica started the game on the mound for Tech and tossed five frames, allowing four hits, no earned runs and struck out four. Chris Monaco went 1.1 and struck out one, while Packy Naughton struck out four of the six batters he faced in the seventh and eighth.

Naughton picked up his first collegiate win with his effort, while Campbell’s Bobby Thorson suffered the loss.

For Perez, the two triples in one game has been done now 63 times by an ACC player and 14 times by a Tech player - the last Tyler Horan (at Duke, March 16, 2013). He now has nine in his career, just two shy of tying for the fifth spot on Tech's career list.

The Campbell Invitational continues on Sunday with another doubleheader that will see the Hokies facing Rider, who fell to the Camels 11-4 in Saturday’s first game, at Noon followed by a Rider-Campbell game at 3:30 p.m.
