PRINCETON, W.Va. – With two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, West Virginia took its first lead of the contest and then held on in the ninth to register a 4-3 victory over Virginia Tech in nonconference baseball action Tuesday evening at Hunnicutt Field.
The Mountaineers used an RBI double from Jacob Rice to tie the game at 3-3 and put runners on second and third with one out. The Hokies intentionally walked Brad Johnson to set up a force at any base and actually got a double play ball, but could not complete it as Ryan McBroom scored the go ahead run.
Saige Jenco notched a three-hit night with a single in the ninth inning, but Sean Carly finished off the game to pick up his third save of the year as Ryan Tezak improved to 4-0 with the win out of the pen.
To start the game off, Jenco, for the sixth time in his last eight starts, singled to lead off the Hokies first inning to extend his reached base streak to 18 straight – in 10 of his last 15 games, Jenco has reached base to leadoff the Tech first. However, he was thrown out at the plate to end the frame – the first of two Hokies to be thrown out at home on the night.
Tech did put the first run on the board in the second when Phil Sciretta, who reached on a fielder’s choice and moved to second on a passed ball, came around to score on Ricky Surum’s RBI single
West Virginia (27-17) knotted the game in the fourth as Cameron O’Brien, Billy Fleming and McBroom led off the inning with three straight singles, the final plating O’Brien with the tying run.
It was Sciretta this time with the RBI single in the sixth inning that put Tech ahead 2-1, as he drove home Brendon Hayden, who led off the inning with his team-leading 14th double.
However, the Mountaineers answered right back with an unearned run in the home half of the sixth when Rice single home Fleming, who singled and moved to second on fielding error.
Neither starter factored into the decision, despite both tossing quality starts. Tech’s Aaron McGarity recorded season-highs in innings pitched (6.2) and strikeouts (6), while Mountaineer starter Corey Walter tossed seven frames with four strikeouts and both just allowed the two runs.
In the top of the eighth, Sciretta come through with another RBI single, this time scoring Sean Keselica, who walked and stole second. Keselica was one of three Hokies with a multi-hit night, along with Sciretta (2) and Jenco (3).
Tech (19-28-1) plays one more game before taking the weekend off. The Hokies will welcome Northeastern to English Field on Wednesday and will face the Huskies for the first time in program history. First pitch is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
