BLACKSBURG – With the tying run standing on second and the winning run on first in the bottom of the ninth, the Virginia Tech baseball team could not get the hit they needed to plate those runs and dropped a 4-2 decision to Maryland in ACC action on Saturday afternoon at English Field.

With two outs in the home half of the frame, the Hokies mounted a rally as Mark Zagunis, Brendon Hayden and Phil Sciretta all singled to load the bases.

However, as Maryland starter Mike Shawaryn had done in the third inning, as well, closer Kevin Mooney got the final out of the frame to escape a bases-loaded jam and the Terrapins held on for the victory.

Maryland (21-12, 7-9 ACC) held two-run leads after its at-bats in the first, second and seventh frames – with Brendon Lowe, Blake Schmidt and Jose Cuas all knocking in single runs.

Tech (16-17-1, 6-11 ACC) answered in the first on an RBI single by Sciretta that scored Zagunis and cut its deficit to 3-2 in the sixth with an RBI from Ricky Surum that plated Sean Keselica.

However, men left on base was the story as the Hokies stranded 13, while the Terrapins left 11 on base.

Zagunis and Hayden each had three hits and were on base four times – Zagunis a hit-by-pitch and Hayden a walk – and Sciretta had two hits.

Shawaryn picked up the win for Maryland improving to 6-2 and Mooney earned his sixth save. Aaron McGarity suffered the loss for Tech and is now 0-1.

The two teams will play the rubber match of the series with a 1 p.m. start time at English Field.
