BLACKSBURG – For the second straight game, the Virginia Tech baseball team took an early lead, but in Wednesday night’s game, the Hokies’ bullpen shutdown their Longwood opponents and helped Tech to a 4-1 victory in nonconference action at English Field.

Alex Perez made his first career start on the mound and went two frames allowing just one hit and striking out one batter.

Tech (15-16-1) gave him a one-run lead in the bottom of the first when Sean Keselica drove in Mark Zagunis, who had walked and moved to third on a Brendon Hayden single.

The Hokies added two more runs in the third on an RBI single by Phil Sciretta that brought home Hayden and Keselica scored on a bases loaded squeeze play executed by Ricky Surum.

Luis Collazo took over for Perez and went three innings, allowed two hits, walked three, surrendered the lone Lancer run in the fifth and struck out four.

Tech got that insurance run back in sixth when Saige Jenco singled home Surum, who led off the inning with a double.

Andrew McDonald tossed the final four innings of the game to pick up his first career save as he struck out five batters and scattered two hits and a walk. Perez improved to 1-1 with the win.

Longwood (14-20) had just one player with a pair of hits – Brandon Delk – while C.J. Roth drove in the only run. Lancer starter Luke Simpson suffered the loss on the mound.

Hayden and Sciretta were the only Hokies with a multi-hit night, as each had two.

Tech will next be in action on Friday night when Maryland comes to town for an ACC series with the Hokies with first pitch slated for 5:30 p.m.
