BLACKSBURG – Brendon Hayden hit his sixth home run of the season – a two-run shot – in the eighth inning to pull the Hokies to within one of No. 24 Miami, but the Virginia Tech baseball team couldn’t push another run across the plate and dropped a 4-3 decision to the Hurricanes on Saturday afternoon in ACC action at English Field.
Hayden, who is among the league leaders in home runs and RBIs coming into the game – he was tied for fifth in long balls and third in RBIs – smacked a 1-2 pitch over the right field wall to also score Mark Zagunis to make it a 4-3 contest.
After Luke Scherzer tossed a scoreless top nine, Miami brought in its closer Bryan Garcia in the home half of the frame. Kyle Wernicki singled to lead off the inning and moved to second on a sac bunt by Logan Bible. However, Garcia was able to get the final outs of the game to pick up his ninth save of the year.
Miami (20-12, 10-4 ACC) took a 3-0 lead in the game after scoring a single run in each of the first three innings, which included an unearned run.
Tech (14-14-1, 5-9 ACC) scratched one run across the plate in the bottom of the third when Ricky Surum, who doubled to lead off the inning, scored on a groundball out by Alex Perez.
The Hurricanes, though, got another unearned run in the seventh to increase their lead back to three.
The Hokies, who had base runners in every inning except one, stranded seven runners but also outhit Miami in the game, 9-6. In its last 13 games, Tech has actually outhit its opponent 11 times, while tying once, but are just 7-6 in the stretch.
Hayden, Bible and Phil Sciretta all had two hits in the game, while Miami’s Brad Fieger was the only player in the contest with three hits.
Miami starter Andrew Suarez improved to 4-1 win the win and Sean Keselica dropped to 2-2 with the loss.
The two teams will conclude the ACC series on Sunday with a scheduled first pitch at 1 p.m.
