CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Through five innings, Virginia Tech baseball did everything it could to knock off No. 1 Virginia in its home at Davenport Field. However, the Hokies missed out a couple of RBI opportunities in the later innings and the Cavaliers struck for two in the seventh to register the 2-1 victory in ACC action Friday night.

Tech (12-10-1, 5-5 ACC) scored its only run in the game in the third inning when Tom Stoffel scored on a Ricky Surum single to right. Stoffel had singled himself and moved to third after a stolen base and an errant throw by Virginia catcher Nate Irving.

Over the first six frames, Hokie starter Brad Markey scattered just three hits to keep the Cavaliers off the scoreboard.

Momentum in the game, though, may have switched when the Hokies had the bases loaded in the top of the sixth with one out. Cavalier starter Nathan Kirby was able to get out of the jam with a double-play ball. It would be the first of four straight frames the Hokies had base runners but couldn’t plate them – three of the last four innings there was a man left on third.

That included the top of the seventh, when Kyle Wernicki led off with a single and moved to third after a pair of outs, but could not make it the last 90 feet.

Virginia (21-4, 8-2 ACC) plated its only two runs in the seventh frame, as Mike Papi scored on a Joe McCarthy single, after leading off the frame with his second double of the game. McCarthy would come around to score on a two-out single by Irving.

In the eighth, Mark Zagunis and Brendon Hayden hit back-to-back two-out singles, but were left stranded and in the ninth, Surum hit a two-out triple to left center, but could not get home, either.

Whit Mayberry picked up the win out of the pen and is now 2-1, while Nick Howard picked up his seventh save. Markey suffered the loss and is now 2-4.

The two teams are scheduled to play the second game of the ACC series on Saturday at 1 p.m.
