SOUTH BEND, Ind. – It was another heartbreaking loss for Virginia Tech pitcher Brad Markey against Notre Dame. After another strong outing versus the Fighting Irish, he came up on the short end of another pitchers’ duel as the Hokies dropped a 2-1 decision in the first of three ACC games against Notre Dame on Friday evening at Four Winds Field.

Markey threw a complete game – as he did a year ago in a 3-0 loss to Notre Dame – while allowing two runs on six hits and striking out six batters. However, Irish starter Sean Fitzgerald was just a tad better, tossing all nine innings, also allowing just six hits, but one run and struck out three.

Notre Dame (8-12, 1-6 ACC) scored its first run in the fifth inning as back-to-back singles put runners on the corners with one out and Conor Biggio followed with a grounder that plated Lane Richards. The Fighting Irish would add another run in the sixth when Blaise Lezynski scored on a wild pitch.

Tech (10-9-1, 3-4 ACC) trailed 2-0 heading into the ninth and got a leadoff double from Saige Jenco. Alex Perez followed with an RBI single, but the Hokies could not get him around to notch a tying run.

Brendon Hayden was the only player in the game that registered a multi-hit night.

The two teams will continue the ACC series with a single game on Saturday evening at Grand Park in Westfield, Ind., with first pitch scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
