BLACKSBURG - It was another back-and-forth game for the Virginia Tech baseball game at English Field on Wednesday afternoon. This time against the VCU Rams, the Hokies jumped out early, but the Rams scored 11 unanswered over three frames and outscored Tech 21-14 to take the nonconference tilt.
Tech was helped by the free passes, drawing 14 walks - the most by the team since being a member of the ACC - and getting hit by two pitches. Their previous high for walks in a single game in the past 10 years was 13 set back in 2006 versus Marshall, while the school record was 17, set twice.
Mark Zagunis led the walk parade with four, while he scored four runs. Saige Jenco had three walks, and scored three times, and both Alex Perez, two runs, and Brendon Hayden, three runs, had a pair of walks.
Driving them home was Sean Keselica, with three hits and four RBIs, and Matt Dauby, with two hits and three RBIs. Keselica also scored twice while Hayden and Miguel Ceballos had two RBIs each. Andrew Mogg also had two hits, including his first as a Hokie, a double in the second.
VCU (13-3) was led by Bill Cullen with five RBIs and Vimael Machin with four RBIs, while both Trevor Marino and Joey Cujas scored four runs apiece.
Matt Lees improved to 2-1 with the win out of the pen and Thomas Gill earned his second save. Phil Sciretta suffered the loss for the Hokies and is 0-1 on the year.
Tech (6-8-1) returns to the field this weekend to host Pittsburgh in its ACC home opening series which starts on Friday at 5:30 p.m.
