CLEMSON, S.C. – No. 15 Clemson jumped out to another five-run lead, but this time there would be no comeback for the Virginia Tech baseball team and the Tigers cruised to a 12-2 victory on Saturday afternoon in ACC action at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
Two Hokie errors allowed three of the first five runs to cross the plate, but the Tigers then used a two-run home run by Jon McGibbon and a grand slam from Westin Wilson to build a double-figure lead.
The Hokies got RBIs from Sean Keselica, who doubled home Mark Zagunis for Tech’s first run in the fourth, and Alex Perez, who singled in Matt Dauby in the fifth. Perez was the only Hokie with a multi-hit afternoon, adding a single in the seventh.
Matthew Crownover improved to 3-1 for Clemson after tossing six frames and allowing just one earned run. Kit Scheetz dropped to 1-1 with the loss, as he lasted just two innings.
Out of the Hokie pen, Andrew McDonald threw two scoreless frames with a pair of strikeouts, while JD Doran, seeing his first action of the spring, went one scoreless inning with one strikeout.
The two teams will complete the three-game conference series with the game on Sunday that is slated for a 1:05 p.m. first pitch.
