BLACKSBURG Brendon Hayden smacked a three-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift Virginia Tech to a 9-6 victory over Cincinnati at English Field Sunday evening to salvage a split of the day after previously falling to UMass Lowell 6-4 in an afternoon contest.

Hayden’s homer capped a Hokies rally in the game against the Bearcats that saw Tech score three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to tie the game at 6-6. It was the second Hokies' walk-off in as many days.

Ironically, both games saw the team’s tied at 3-3 entering the later innings, with UMass Lowell plating three runs in the ninth to win its game over Tech. Cincinnati took a 6-3 lead after the top of the eighth after the Bearcats plated two runs in their at-bats.

Leading the Hokies in the doubleheader was Matt Dauby, who had four hits, including a solo home run and a double, and four runs scored, Kyle Wernicki, who also had four hits on the day, and Mark Zagunis, who had two doubles and scored three times

Hayden had just two hits but led the team with four RBIs, while Sean Keselica and Saige Jenco each drove in a pair.

Tech used eight pitchers in the two games combined, with three of them making their first appearances of the season. Phil Sciretta had the best outing, as he went 3.2 innings against Cincinnati, allowed one unearned run on four hits and struck out five batters.

Sean Kennedy actually pitched in both games, getting the win against the Bearcats, while Luke Scherzer suffered the loss to the River Hawks.

UMass Lowell improved to 5-2 with the win as the team went 3-1 on the weekend, while Cincinnati dropped to 2-7 and went 0-4.

Tech (6-3) returns to the field on Wednesday, welcoming William & Mary to Blacksburg with a 5:30 p.m. start.
