BATON ROUGE, La. – Virginia Tech’s freshmen, with some help from catcher Mark Zagunis, led the Hokies to an 8-2 victory over Texas Southern on Saturday afternoon at Alex Box Stadium in the second day of the LSU baseball Tournament.

Tech started five freshmen – four of them hitters – and the quartet combined to go 6 for 14 with five runs scored, two RBIs, two walks, two stolen bases and one hit by pitch. Zagunis added a two-hit day and tied his career high with four RBIs.

The Hokies jumped out to a six-run lead after their at-bats in the top of the second. Alex Perez scored Saige Jenco with the first run with a double and Zagunis drove home Tom Stoffel on a sac fly. In the second, Jenco plated two with a single (Ryan Burns and Miguel Ceballos) and a two-RBI double by Zagunis made it 6-0.

That was all the run support the Tech pitchers would need – both freshmen – as Kit Scheetz picked up his first career win in his first career start. He went 5.0 innings with five strikeouts, allowed two runs on five hits and walked just one. Aaron McGarity earned his first save by tossing the last four innings scoreless, scattering five hits and striking out two.

Texas Southern (2-5) plated its only two runs in the bottom of the second on an RBI single by Andrew Garza and a sac fly by Chris DeLeon. Felix Gomez (0-1) suffered the loss on the mound for the Tigers.

Tech (2-2) will finish the LSU Tournament with a Noon (ET) game against Toledo before heading back to Blacksburg to start a six-game home stand.
