CHARLESTON, S.C. – Virginia Tech scored in all but the third and ninth frames and got solid pitching from starter Brad Markey and its two relievers as the Hokies registered their first win of the season – and first for head coach Patrick Mason – with an 8-1 victory over Delaware in nonconference action at Riley Park Saturday afternoon.

Alex Perez and Mark Zagunis led the offensive attack as each drove in a pair of runs, while Saige Jenco and Matt Dauby each crossed the plate twice. The Hokies also had four extra-base hits in the game, with Dauby registering a pair of doubles, Perez hitting a triple and Brendon Hayden adding a double.

Markey threw six innings for Tech, allowing six hits but just one earned run and struck out nine and did not walk a batter to pick up his first win of the season. Markey was one K shy of his career-high for strikeouts, notching 10-K performances against Delaware and Florida State last year.

Aaron McGarity then tossed two scoreless innings of relief and struck out three, while Sean Kennedy finished the game with a perfect ninth with a pair of punch outs.

Adam Davis suffered the loss on the mound for Delaware. EJ Stoltzfus had two doubles and drove in the Blue Hens only run. Norm Donkin also had a two-hit game for Delaware, who was playing in its season opener.

Tech will take the week off before heading back on the road for a tournament in Baton Rouge, La. The Hokies will face the host Tigers of LSU on Friday night, with a start time scheduled for 8 p.m. (EST) – a game that can be seen on Cox Sports Televsion.
