CHARLESTON, S.C. – Virginia Tech baseball lost its season opener for the first time in four seasons as The Citadel scored two times in each of the first three innings and held on for a 6-2 victory in a nonconference game on Friday evening at Riley Park.

The Bulldogs, in their first game of the year as well, jumped out to their early lead by using a Bo Thompson single to plate one, two sacrifice flies from Calvin Orth and Mason Davis made it 3-0, and an RBI double from Hughston Armstrong gave them a 4-0 after two frames. Drew DeKerlegand then delivered a two-RBI double in the third to plate their final runs.

The Citadel’s starting pitcher James Reeves kept the Hokies off the board over six innings, getting into trouble just once, in the third. Tech loaded the bases with two outs, but Reeves got out of the jam by inducing a groundball and then went on to win his first game of the year.

Zach Sherrill and Ross White tossed scoreless innings in relief, the seventh and eighth respectively, before David Rivera allowed two runs in the ninth.

The Hokies scored their runs when Tom Stoffel singled through the left side, bringing home Ryan Burns, and Matt Dauby followed with an RBI groundout that plated Brendon Hayden.

Tanner McIntyre took the loss for the Hokies, his first as a Tech pitcher, as he lasted just 1.2 innings. Kit Scheetz pitched the final 6.2 innings and struck out three, and faced just one over the minimum the last five innings, throwing three perfect frames.

Tech will return to action to face Delaware on Saturday morning at Riley Park, with first pitch scheduled for 11 a.m.
